Sculpture Details

Artist: The Double life sized sculpture was created by Jeff Bates Art, a metal artist based in Fruita, Colorado.

Design: It depicts a kayaker in mid-paddle and is crafted from repurposed tools and scrap metal, featuring industrial elements like barrels, and gears.

Significance: The piece was installed as part of the city’s Statues with Swagger program.

Location & Connection

The sculpture is situated near the entrance to the city, serving as a gateway that honors the local Montrose Water Sports Park on the Uncompahgre River. The name “Eddy” refers to the circular current in a river where kayakers often rest or regroup.

Some fun facts about Eddy; He is 6 feet tall in his seated position, and would be all of 12 feet tall is he ever gets out of that boat. He measures 80 inches around his chest, and his hands are the size of a baseball mitt.  His helmet is made from nuts, and his glasses are stainless steel, and will never rust.   Eddy, has a brother sculpture, a kayaker named Rio, in Fruita, Colorado in a Roundabout there.  Similar but Rio is life and half sized, and is mostly stainless steel.
